Things To Know

About Bedbugs

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, reddish-brown nocturnal insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals.

Typically found in sleeping areas like beds, mattresses and nearby furniture. They can also infest offices and hotels.

Their life cycle involves eggs, nymphs and adults, with the entire process taking weeks to months.

Swift and effective action is crucial to address bed bug infestations.

While bed bugs don’t transmit diseases, their bites can cause discomfort and may lead to secondary infections if scratched excessively.

HOW TO

Identify Bedbugs

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown and wingless.

Look for bites on the skin, often in clusters.

Check bedding and furniture for tiny, reddish-brown fecal spots and shed exoskeletons.

Some may notice a sweet, musty odour in heavily infested areas.

If identification is challenging, professional pest control assistance is recommended, as they can conduct a comprehensive inspection and provide effective treatment, emphasising the importance of early detection for successful management of bed bug infestations.

PRE-TREATMENT

THINGS TO DO BEFORE WE ARRIVE

1
Clear the floor space and move large furniture

Take it away from the walls in the infested bedroom(s) (i.e. bed, wardrobe, bedside tables). Do not remove any item(s) from the infested bedroom(s) as this could spread the problem.

2
Empty cabinets, drawers (inc. bed side tables) and cupboards

Place items in sealed bags.

3
Detach headboards from the wall.

By creating a physical barrier and minimizing potential hiding spots, this precautionary measure significantly reduces the risk of bed bug infestations. Detached headboards not only make inspection and cleaning more accessible but also serve as a proactive element in your defense against these pests.

4
Wash, tumble dry or dry clean

Make sure to clean bedding, clothes and soft toys from the infested room(s) (we cannot treat these with the insecticide). Washing at 60 degrees Celsius or tumble drying on a hot dry at 40/45 degrees Celsius for at least 30 minutes will kill bed bugs at all stages of their lifecycle. Once cleaned keep away from affected rooms or ideally in a sealed bag until after treatment. Bag and seal any items not yet laundered.

5
Vacuum

Vacuum floors and soft furniture (i.e. sofas, rugs) thoroughly throughout the property. Be particularly thorough in the effected bedroom(s), ensuring you vacuum the mattress, under the bed, where the floor meets the wall at the edges of the room and where there are gaps in floorboards, then dispose of hoover contents straight away. This will help reduce the number eggs, larvae and adult bed bugs before we arrive. This will also aid the effectiveness of the treatment as dust can act as a barrier to the insecticide.

6
Get a sample

If you can possibly get a sample it can help speed up identification in case there are none visible on the inspection date.

How To Prevent Bed Bugs

  • Regular inspection and cleaning.
  • The use of bed bug-proof covers.
  • Professional pest control for severe infestations.
  • Travel can facilitate their spread, as they can be transported in luggage and clothing.
  • Keep luggage elevated in hotels.
  • Avoid bringing second-hand furniture or mattresses into your home without thorough inspection.

Inspect & Assess

Our highly trained technician will start by carrying out an inspection of the property to confirm you have a bed bug problem and to establish the extent of the infestation. They will also conduct a risk assessment to ensure the treatment they plan to use is safe for you, your family and your pets.

Treatment

The technician will spray a residual insecticide in the infested bedroom(s) and in some cases, adjacent rooms, using one of our company-approved products. The wet spray will have an instant knock down effect on adult bed bugs. Once dried it is safe to you and pets and invisible to the eye on most surfaces, but the residual properties of the dried insecticide will remain active continuing to kill the bed bugs as they emerge from eggs and as they move around and encounter the insecticide. The residual pesticide can continue to work for up to 3 months.

POST TREATMENT

Things to do after we have been

BE AWARE

Bed bug eggs can remain viable for 3 months and adults can survive for more than a year without a blood meal at low temperatures.

DO NOT VACUUM

For at least 2 weeks. This allows the dried insecticide to continue to do its job on bed bugs as they hatch from eggs and move around in search of a blood meal.

KEEP EFFECTED ROOMS WARM

At 21 degrees or over (the hotter the better, 27 degrees can stimulate eggs to hatch in 5-6 days!) for 8-10 days after treatment, as this will give the bed bugs the conditions needed to quickly hatch from eggs and stimulate the adult’s need for a blood meal.

CONTINUE TO LIVE AND SLEEP IN THE EFFECTED ROOMS

Our vibrations and the air we breathe out attracts bed bugs and will encourage movement to bring them into contact with the dried insecticide.

USE INTERCEPTORS FOR BED LEGS / WHEELS.

Interceptor traps placed on all of the legs of a piece of furniture can help prevent bed bugs from infesting that piece of furniture because of their poor ability to climb on smooth surfaces.

USE MATTRESS AND PILLOW ENCASEMENTS

or consider replacing where possible.
